Pre-Production by Harvey
Pre-production
Our first job to do in our prelim task was to pick our
groups that we work in. We had to pick people who we thought we would work well
together. We would need to make sure we had trustworthy people and friends with
in our group, this is important so we would not fight over who does what when
delegating work around the group. Conflict would cause disaster as it would
disrupt our group’s teamwork and team work is very important in this task.
After this we received the brief, within our prelim we had to encumber the
following; the 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and match on action.
Obviously we did not know what these were so we had to research them. Our main
source of research was the lessons provided by Mr Sheriff and Mr Clifford in
these lessons we looked in depth into these rules. After this we had a lesson
to watch previous prelim videos for inspiration and to create a story board
this was our first plan. Our story board was our creative input as a team it
was our very first endeavour into film making. This is the process when we plan
our prelim we planned everything down to the finest of details such as camera
shots, camera angles and setting. In this process we had to draw what each and
every shot looked like we learnt that this is one of the most important steps
into making a film, we also learnt that to make a good or effective thriller we
must take care in this process as planning is key for a good film and an
effective thriller. In lessons previous
to this we learnt about camera shots so when it came to filming the following
lesson we were pretty prepared, and because of our story board we knew exactly
what we wanted to do, we had a clear impression of what we wanted before we
started shooting. We had a lesson in which the previous year talked to us
giving us their advice we took this advice and they told us that the edit is
the most important and is the most time consuming. Another good piece of advice
that the year 13 gave us is to film too much to allow for bad footage to be cut
in the edit. Filming was quite a brief period as after only one lesson we had
enough footage for our prelim, too much. However due to our inexperience after
that lesson we thought we would need more footage however when we wanted to
film again we had a few continuity errors for example we could not get the same
class again and one of our team members wore the wrong clothes so these
mistakes lead to us not being able to film anything at all on that day but
luckily as I said we had enough footage for our prelim which had to be between
30 seconds and a minute.

During the process of filming our Prelim we had a few issues. Our first issue that we had to face was the location we were going to use for our Prelim, we had to make sure that it will be available for when we need it however we did manage to find a room which was empty and we used it under permission. The second problem we had with our Prelim was that we failed to wear the same clothes as we did on the first day of the filming the Prelim, so therefore we could not film any Prelim that day because we didn’t have the same appropriate clothes on. The other problem we had was that we couldn’t shoot the clips we generally wanted to put in our Prelim because the video we had already made was over a minute and we still had to crop some bits out which we wanted to keep however after getting rid of the waste bits, we got a video clip which was 53 seconds exactly and that was just about right. The major mistake we saw once we watched our video with the class was that the first part of our Prelim where Haris is walking down the corridor to enter the classroom the camera is recording portrait and then as soon as I have entered the room Freddie started recording me landscape, the rest of the video was recorded landscape but the feedback we got from Mr Clifford and the year 13 was that record landscape not portrait because when it comes to watching it, it will look better and wider however this did make it us look a bit unprofessional. Year 13 complimented our clip by saying that our clip had good continuity which is quite complicated to do however Freddie done a good job of it. The clip was good but we specifically got told to do the shot where I am going to open the door and Freddie is supposed to record my hand opening the door but we failed to do that but we still got a good result. Another problem we had with filming was that the corridor I had to walk down to approach the classroom was really busy so we had to stop recording several times because of it, so this took quite a lot of time to re do everything, this of course wasted quite a lot of time so therefore our lesson ended because it was only an hour. If we had another opportunity to do the Prelim again, we would be a lot more prepared than we were and organise it at times when it was not busy. We would do more shots and think of a better introduction by using more elements that will help us improve the whole Prelim. I think the whole group done well by giving each other idea’s on what we could do to make it better but I think we done well.
